If your child has a dyslexia diagnosis or a learning difference, you may be sitting on funding you don’t know about.
Educational Savings Accounts — commonly called ESAs — are state-funded accounts that allow families to use public education dollars to pay for approved educational services outside of traditional public school. Think of it like a dedicated education bank account. The state deposits funds and you direct those funds toward approved providers, therapies, curriculum, and services that meet your child’s specific needs.
And in many states dyslexia intervention is explicitly covered.
How ESAs work.
Each state runs its own ESA or scholarship program with its own eligibility requirements, funding amounts, and approved uses. In general the process looks like this:
A family applies for the scholarship program in their state. Once approved funds are deposited into an account — either quarterly or annually depending on the state. The family then directs those funds toward approved educational expenses by paying approved vendors directly through the state’s marketplace portal or by submitting reimbursement requests.
The key thing to understand is that these are not loans and they are not income. They are public education dollars that follow your child rather than going to a school building.
How much funding is available?
Funding amounts vary significantly by state and by the student’s specific situation. Students with disabilities — including dyslexia — often qualify for higher funding tiers. In some states a student with an IEP may qualify for significantly more funding than a general homeschool student.
The important thing to know is that in many cases the funding available is more than enough to cover meaningful, sustained literacy intervention.
Which states have ESA programs?
ESA and scholarship programs exist across the country and are growing rapidly. Ember and Ivy Literacy is currently an approved vendor in the following programs:
- Florida — Step Up For Students (FES-UA, FES-EO, FTC, PEP)
- Utah — Utah Fits All
- Texas — Texas Education Freedom Act
- Arizona — Empowerment Scholarship Account
- Arkansas — Education Freedom Account
- Alabama — CHOOSE Act
- Louisiana — GATOR Scholarship Program
If you are in one of these states and your child has a dyslexia diagnosis or an IEP, there is a real possibility that your ESA funds can cover some or all of the cost of intervention with Ember and Ivy Literacy.
How to use your ESA funds with Ember and Ivy.
The process varies slightly by state but in general it works like this.
